There are sensible cities, and there's Barcelona. Here the architecture ripples, façades are covered in mosaics, the sea is never far and life spills onto the terraces late into the night. The Catalan capital has that rare talent for mixing masterpiece and lazing about, culture and beach — sometimes on the same day.

Two days are enough to grasp its essence, provided you organise around its enfant terrible: Antoni Gaudí, the visionary architect who marked the city with his fantastical touch. Find all the visits on our what to do in Barcelona page.

Day 1 — In Gaudí's footsteps: Sagrada Família & Park Güell

Start with the maddest monument in Europe: the Sagrada Família. Gaudí devoted the last forty years of his life to it, knowing he'd never see it finished — the site, begun in 1882, is still under construction today. Inside, the light filtered through the stained glass turns the nave into a stone forest bathed in colour: a moment that rarely leaves anyone indifferent.

In the afternoon, head up to Park Güell, a surreal garden where undulating benches, a mosaic salamander and leaning columns offer an unbeatable view over the city and the sea. This is Gaudí at his most playful, the one who dreamed of a garden city and left us a fairy-tale set.

Day 2 — Old Barcelona: Las Ramblas, the Gothic Quarter & the sea

Spend your morning in the historic heart. Walk down Las Ramblas, the city's liveliest artery, to the Boqueria market and its colourful stalls. Then lose yourself in the Barri Gòtic, a medieval maze of narrow lanes where the cathedral and timeless little squares appear.

In the afternoon, treat yourself to some Mediterranean: the Barceloneta and its beaches are twenty minutes' walk away. End with tapas and a glass of cava — because in Barcelona, eating well isn't an option, it's an art of living.
